Champion Gull sailor Ruth Edwards has sent us this wonderful picture of her boat in action. And, there is also an offer of a trip to Girton Sailing Club. If you would like to take part in some fairly non-competitive racing in 2011 perhaps Girton might be the ideal location. Let me know. Here’s Ruth’s email:
Hi Chris,
Thought you might like to see 1842 in action at Girton Sailing Club a few weeks ago on a VERY windy day. It was one of the five pursuit race days held each year, and although we finally finished in, rather than on, the water, we won the trophy! (Last man standing!)The photographer was Steve Johnson, one of our club members.
The occasion was the John Bower Trophy on the 29th August. There were two pursuit races: in the first, six set out, three retired; in the second, two set out (one unofficially, as he wasn't at the start!) and one finished - albeit in the water as we capsized just before the end of the race. Someone said the wind touched force 7 at one point - but 1842 kept going thoughout both races. (The third was abandoned!!!). If you ever want a Gull meeting, you'll all be very welcome at Girton, it's nicely in the midlands, only 8 miles from the A1, and a very friendly club, (each year we host a day for Streakers, and a weekend for Miracles, and are very happy to accommodate such meetings. Plenty of camping and food available).
A huge "thank you" to helm Paul Leafe - we sail his Ent or my Gull depending on wind conditions!! - and especially to the safety boat teams that day.
Thanks for the site and blog,
Best wishes,
Ruth.
